Planning a Move

Planning a Move

Pack up and move – sounds simple doesn’t?

Well, after a few years it is incredible how much stuff one can accumulate. So, start packing early!

However, there are a few things in planning a move that should be attended to first:

1. Reserve a moving company or a rental truck and a few friends.
Check out the moving company with The Chamber of Commerce. You can hire the moving company to load and unload while you do the packing.
Get moving quotes in writing. Keep your receipts because there may be a tax claim against moving if you are moving to be closer to work even if it is a new job in another part of the country.

2. Check your home insurance to see if your belongings are insured during the move.

3. Start collecting boxes early from the grocery stores. Do not wait until the end of the month. Other people are moving too!

4. Hold a garage sale, give things away or take them to the recycling depot.

5. Make a list of your belongings before they are packed in case you have to make an insurance claim. Take pictures of you more expensive items.

6. Try to use up food items as much as possible. Some food items do not travel well.

7. Let the utilities know you are moving: telephone, cable, power, water

8. Send out change of address cards to anyone who does or might send mail to you.

9. If you are moving to an apartment call the superintendent to reserve the elevator a few weeks in advance.

10. If you are moving to a new community ask your doctor and dentist for any pertinent prescriptions or X-rays. Make sure any prescriptions are filled before moving day.

Moving costs vary depending on the size of the household and the distance to be moved.

Hiring a Mover

Hiring a mover is an important part of the planning to move. If at all possible do not move when everyone else is moving, like the end of the school year. The movers will be so busy they have to hire inexperienced and possibly very unmotivated workers to move your belongings onto the truck. They either do not know how or do not care how they handle your furniture or how fast they do it.

1. Ask your friends who have moved recently for referrals. Ask 2 or 3 movers for references.

2. Obtain moving cost estimates and an outline of the fees – flat rate, hourly rates. The mover should visit your home to ensure an accurate estimate.

3. Make sure your belongings are insured during the move.

4. If you do your own packing find proper boxes and wrapping materials.Packing yourself can take a long time.

Is your Move Job Related?

Perhaps your employer will pay for some or all of the move. If not, in Canada a move of more than 40km to be nearer your present or new workplace can be tax deductible. These expenses can include some meals as well as temporary lodgings. Keep your receipts.

Reasons to Move

1. The floor plan of your home just does not work for your family.
2. You have out grown your home or the kids have moved out.
3. The commute is just too long and frustrating.
4. You want a change of location: to the country or elsewhere.
