Kitchen Countertops

Kitchen Countertops

Kitchen countertops come in many different materials, styles and thicknesses. The arrival of granite countertops set the stage for new and traditional countertops to be introduced and in some cases to be reintroduced such as quartz countertops and those of glass, recycled glass, do it yourself concrete, slate, various types of tile, limestone, marble, copper, stainless steel, corian/staron, and others. There has been a resurgence in the styles available in that old standby, formica and laminate countertops, which are by far less expensive than some of the previous ones mentioned.
Some money can be saved in replacing a kitchen countertop by simply unscrewing the countertop and taking it to a countertop store to have a new replament made. It might take about a week. The screws holding the countertop are under the countertop inside the cupboards. The cold and hot water taps as well as the drain can be unthreaded in order to remove the sink and taps. Sounds like a good time to replace the sink and faucets also.

Here is a table comparing some of the more popular types of kitchen countertops.

Engineered Stone is a relatively new product.
The exisiting countertop can be resurfaced with engineered stone.
Engineered granite or quartz is made from real granite or quartz. The stone is cut up and reformed with a resin that makes a product that is heat resistant, scratch proof, does not stain and is highly resistant to bacterial contamination. Ordinary stone is porous. Wine, vinegar, oil and butters will stain it.They never need to be sealed.
The countertop is only one quarter of an inch thick. It is placed directly over the old countertop.
