Flooring Ideas

Flooring Ideas is a discussion of flooring for all parts of the house, patio and garage including best laminate flooring, hard wood flooring of all types of wood, engineered hardwood flooring, bamboo hardwood flooring, vinyl, tile, leather, laminate and slate.

If the environment is important to you, your children and your grandchildren then leaving a small footprint can be achieved by insisting on high quality, high end materials that are produced, used and installed in socially responsible ways.
Bamboo, wood, cork, and leather floors made of recycled leather are available. Avoid flooring that is installed with chemicals and glues that inhibit indoor air quality.
Any new floor looks great first installed. Ask the retailer about the ease of plank replacement after an accident that mars the floor.

Squeaky Flooring

Before replacing a floor is the time to fix squeaky floors. Floors squeak when the subfloor becomes loosely attached to the floor joists. Usually this happens when the subfloor is attached with nails only. The subfloor is best attached to the joists with glue and screws. But what to do when replacing a floor? Well, we can't use glue but we can certainly put a lot of screws into the floor to more firmly attach it to the floor joists.

1.

Hardwood Flooring

If your home has hardwood floors, that’s what buyers want. Rip out dated wall-to-wall carpet and refinish with hardwood flooring. But remember wood does not do well in a flood that can happen in a bathroom or basement!

2.

Engineered wood flooring

Engineered wood floors are generally 3 to 5 thin sheets of wood that are laminated together to form one plank. These floors will range from 1/4" to 9/16" in thickness, and from 2 1/4" to 7" in width. The lengths range from 1 to 5 feet in length. The top prefinished layer can consist of domestic or exotic hardwood species. The different layers are in opposite directions creating a wood floor that is stable and less affected by moisture than a 3/4" solid wood floor.

Best Laminate flooring

Laminate flooring is available in planks or tiles. There are wide plank floors also. Laminate flooring can resemble wood or even stone. The flooring can be installed directly over the subfloor. It is not attached to the floor and this allows some expansion and contraction due to humidity. Because it does contain some wood products laminate flooring should not be installed in areas of high humidity. The planks or tiles snap together with an interlocking design or tongue and groove design.
Laminate flooring consists of four layers bonded together by heat and pressure; the top layer is a thin layer of aluminum oxide, the second layer is a decorative resin based combination of melamine and aluminum oxide, the third is a high density fibre board saturated in resins, the bottom layer is usually a resin infused wood chip composite. There are a large variety of widths and styles from which to choose. Laminate is relatively easy to install and is more economical than hardwood or engineered wood.
Pergo laminate flooring and formica laminate flooring are two popular laminate flooring brands.

4.

Cork flooring

While it is relatively new to us, cork flooring has been in Europe for centuries because of its resilience, durability and versatile, attractive designs. Cork is hand harvested, and no trees are harmed in this ancient practice. Century old cork trees, harvested every nine years, still thrive in the forests of Portugal and Spain. Cork flooring can be installed over existing flooring including tiles. Cork mutes sound, provides cushioning and warmth and is hypoallergenic. Cork is naturally flame retardant and flame resistant.

5.

Bamboo flooring

Bamboo flooring is eco-friendly, durable, cheaper and easy to install.

6.

Tile flooring

Replace chipped or cracked tiles. Clean or replace the grout.Expensive ceramic tile looks good in the entryway.

7.

Broadloom flooring

If your sub-floor is plywood, then replace the carpeting with light tan carpeting. Neutral carpeting is the best choice for resale.

8.

Leather flooring

Leather flooring made with a cork backing is a natural insulator for warmth, comfort and quietness. The cork backing eliminates the need for an underlay that saves time and money on installation. Leather contains no harmful VOC emissions and no added formaldehyde. This flooring is available in tile form. The leather can be made from recycled leather. Wear warranties can extend to 25 years.

9.

Concrete flooring

Stamped and stained concrete flooring can resemble stone, brick or tile without the cost. The concrete flooring can be precast, polished and laid like cut stone.
